The Corner

STOP #5

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a council made up of the nine historically black international Greek organizations referred to as the “divine nine”.  "The Corner" refers to the intersection between the library and the Center for Health and Well-Being. The Richard T. Greener Statue is also located here and was designed in honor of the first African American professor at UofSC. The reason for picking this location is because I can show the visitors on the tour the statue as well as McBryde, which is located behind the statue. Although we once had all nine, we currently have eight out of the nine NPHC organizations. McBryde is very significant to African American history on campus and specifically the history of NPHC at the university.  This residence hall use to be the fraternity house for several fraternities including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. This organization is the first of the 9 historically black organizations to be founded and was chartered at UofSC in March 1973. For years, there were greek letters of the Theta Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. embedded in the concrete in front of McBryde. Another historically black fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated was chartered in April 1973. It was the first NPHC organization to break ground and build a house in greek village on July 8th, 2005. This broke many barriers on campus and paved a way to build relationships between different greek organizations. After a few years, The Zeta Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated decided to have another organization begin to rent out the space; Phi Mu Sorority. This past November, the University implemented a plot located at Women’s Quad in honor of the charter of the Theta Gamma chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The Theta Gamma Chapter was chartered on the campus of the University of South Carolina on November 3rd, 1973. Throughout the years, the yard continued to grow and more NPHC organizations were chartered. We now have active chapters for the organizations mentioned above as well as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
